Plano is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas, located about twenty miles north of downtown Dallas. The city of Plano is a part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area. The completion of the Houston and Central Texas Railway in 1872 helped the city to grow, and it was incorporated in 1873. By the year of 1874, the population had grown to more than 500. In the early 1880s, Plano was devastated by a fire that raged through the business district, destroying most of the buildings. After the district was rebuilt, the city flourished once again throughout the 1880s. In 1881, the city assumed responsibility for what would eventually become Plano Independent School District, putting an end to the days of it being served solely by private schools.
Starting out, the population of Plano grew slowly, reaching just over 1,300 in 1900, and rising to 3,600 by 1960. During the 1970s, Plano began to feel a boom after World War II. A series of public works projects and a change in taxes that removed the farming community from the town helped increase the overall population. In 1970, the population reached 17,800 and by 1980, it had exploded to 72,000.
